In a thrilling encounter, Uganda Christian University (UCU) revived their qualification hopes with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over YMCA Comprehensive Institute.

The 2019 champions, who were struggling to find their footing, came from behind to secure a crucial win at their Mukono playground on a chilly Monday.

The match was an action-packed affair, with both teams displaying their skills and determination.

YMCA drew first blood, with Kanaabi Hakim scoring in the 2nd minute.

However, UCU’s relentless pressure eventually paid off, as Abit Harry equalized in the 27th minute with a well-taken header, courtesy of Oyaka Geoffrey’s pinpoint cross.

UCU’s momentum continued to build, and they were awarded a penalty for handball just three minutes later.

Ogola Patrick made no mistake from the spot, giving the hosts a deserved lead.

Despite YMCA’s valiant efforts to level the score, UCU’s defense held firm, ensuring a vital 2-1 win.

This victory marks a significant turnaround for UCU, who finished the first round at the bottom of the table with just two points.

They now top Group C with eight points, having won two matches in the second round, including a 5-1 thrashing of Kabale University.

YMCA’s qualification hopes, on the other hand, are all but extinguished.

Even if they defeat Kabale University in their final fixture, they cannot surpass St. Lawrence, who have seven points, or UCU, who have eight points.

YMCA currently sit at the bottom of the table with five points.

The stage is now set for a thrilling encounter between St. Lawrence and UCU, which will determine who will represent Group C in the quarterfinals.

The league will continue on Tuesday with a match between Kumi University and Victoria University.
