SC Villa secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Lugazi in the Stanbic Uganda Cup Round of 16 match played in Najjembe, courtesy of a second-half goal from Reagan Mpande.

This triumph marked Villa’s third consecutive win and ended Lugazi’s unbeaten run in the competition, while also handing them their first goal concession after two clean sheets.

The match began with Lugazi showcasing intent, seeking to score early.

However, Hussein Ssenonga’s attempt was denied by Meddie Kibirige, while Frank Mulimi’s powerful shot was kept out by goalkeeper Matovu after a well-delivered cross from Sula Matovu Malouda.

Aslam Ssemakula also failed to capitalize on a defensive error to break the deadlock.

SC Villa had a golden opportunity when Juma Mutebi’s blunder left Sula Matovu with an open net, but he failed to convert.

At the start of the second half, Francis Onekalit thought he had put Villa ahead, but his goal was ruled out for offside.

However, in the 53rd minute, Reagan Mpande capitalized on a defensive mix-up to hand Villa the lead.

Lugazi had a chance to equalize when substitute Ian Amannya was set up by Sharif Saaka, but he failed to find the target.

With their exit from the Uganda Cup, Lugazi FC will shift focus to the Uganda Premier League, where they host Maroons on matchday 21.

Meanwhile, SC Villa awaits the quarter-final draw and will next host Vipers in a crucial league fixture.

Villa joins a growing list of Uganda Premier League teams in the quarterfinals, including holders Kitara, BUL FC, and Police FC.
