Uganda Christian University (UCU), the 2019 Pepsi University Football League champions, returned to winning ways with a resounding 5-1 victory over Kabale University at UCU grounds in Mukono on Thursday.

The Cardinals, who had been winless in their previous three league encounters, were determined to make a statement.

UCU’s aggressive start paid off, with Oyaka Geoffrey scoring from a tight angle just two minutes into the game.

Five minutes later, Wambuga Marvin doubled the lead with a powerful header from a corner kick, sending the hosts into early celebrations.

The visitors, who were shaky in defense and uncomfortable with the ball in the first 10 minutes, tried to stabilize and created a few chances. However, UCU’s goalkeeper, Mwidu Elton, made a classical save to deny Owanyi Micheal’s effort.

Abiti Harry extended UCU’s lead with a thunderous strike in the 34th minute, ending the first stanza 3-0 in favor of the Cardinals.

In the second stanza, Abiti Harry completed his brace in the 67th minute, making it 4-0 for UCU.

Kyomuhendo Peter then scored the fifth goal with a wonderful finish. Kabale University’s consolation goal came late in the 83rd minute, courtesy of Agaba Jovin’s successful penalty kick.

The win propelled UCU to second position in Group C, two points behind leaders St. Lawrence University, while Kabale University settled for the last position.

To brighten their qualification chances, UCU needs to win their two remaining fixtures against YMCA Comprehensive Institute and St. Lawrence University.
