Uganda head coach Firew Asefa Hailegebreal has reshuffled the leadership of the Crested Cranes, handing defender Shadia Nankya the captain’s armband ahead of Thursday’s crucial Olympic qualifier against Zambia.
Nankya will lead Uganda against the Copper Queens in the first leg of the second round of the 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, with the return leg scheduled for next week.

The experienced defender will be supported by goalkeepers Ruth Aturo and Vanessa Edith Karungi, who have been appointed first and second assistant captains respectively.
The appointment marks a return to a familiar leadership role for Nankya, who previously captained the national team to the CECAFA Women’s Championship title in 2022.
Aturo also brings considerable leadership experience, having served as the team’s principal captain for several years.
The goalkeeper has, however, shared the armband with a number of players during her time with the national side.
Before Hailegebreal’s latest decision, Fauzia Najjemba had captained the Crested Cranes in some matches, while Hasifah Nassuna has also previously led the team.

With the captaincy now settled, Uganda turn their attention to a formidable Zambia side as they seek an advantage in the two-legged Olympic qualifying tie.
The winner over the two legs will advance to face either Mauritius or Ghana in the next qualification round.
