In a thrilling display of football prowess, Light High School Sseguku emerged victorious in both the boys’ and girls’ competitions in the Kitende zone, claiming both trophies at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
The girls’ football final saw Light High School Sseguku overcome Kings Way SS 2-0, with Violah Namugabi, an S3 student, scoring a brace, one goal in each half.
The boys’ final, however, was a closely contested match between Light High School Sseguku and St Mary’s Boarding School Kitende, which was played under floodlights.
The highly anticipated duel lived up to its billing, with dramatic scenes, a charged atmosphere, and epic action.
A prolonged delay in kick-off due to license verification issues left out key players for Light High School Sseguku, but the team persevered.
In a nail-biting finish, normal time ended 1-1, with both goals scored in the 9 added minutes after regulation time.
Super substitute Leonard Kasaanya scored in the 97th minute, but Light High School players, officials, and fans protested, alleging the ball never crossed the line.
The unrest that followed took about a quarter of an hour to resolve, but play resumed under referee Allan Musisi.
Ikoona Kizza curled home a beautiful free-kick from 30 yards to equalize, sending the match to a penalty shootout.
Both teams missed their first two kicks, but Light High School Sseguku ultimately won 5-4, ending St Mary’s Kitende’s two-decade dominance at the zonal level.
In the boys’ section, there were no medals for the finalists, while the girls’ winner, Light High School Sseguku, received gold medals, and Kings Way took silver.
Kajjansi Progressive Academy secured third place by defeating Kings Way 2-0 in the third-place playoff match.
The four semi-finalists in boys’ football will represent the Kitende zone at the 2025 Wakiso regional championship.
