In a dramatic clash that captivated the local Bombo crowd, Bukedea Comprehensive made it through to the semifinals of the East African schools football championship, edging out St. Mary’s Boarding Secondary School Kitende 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time.

The match, eagerly awaited by fans, began with Bukedea taking the initiative. Deus Niwaha gave the Eastern Uganda side the lead with a brilliant header into the top corner of the net, following a precise corner kick by Savour Jaksita from the left flank.

However, St. Mary’s Kitende responded swiftly. Five minutes later, Elvis Apakrwoth capitalized on a rebound to tap in the equalizer, sending the match back to square one.

The game took a dramatic turn in the 27th minute when Bukedea forward Patrick Ssenkusu was sent off for a second yellow card, leaving his side to play with ten men for the remaining 20 minutes of normal time.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Bukedea held firm under intense pressure from Kitende’s attacking force and kept the game level, ultimately forcing the match into a penalty shootout.

In the ensuing shootout, Bukedea demonstrated composure and precision, converting four of their penalties, while Kitende could only manage one.

As a result, Bukedea Comprehensive secured their place in the semifinals, alongside Uganda Martyrs High School, Fortportal SS, and Mentor SS, with a chance to claim the coveted title.

The showdown was a testament to Bukedea’s resilience, showing that they can overcome adversity and thrive even when facing a man down.

Tomorrow morning, they will be honored alongside the other semifinalists, marking a milestone in their impressive run in the tournament.

Semi-finals

1. Bukedea Comprehensive Vs Fortportal

2. Mentor SS Lira Vs Uganda Martyrs
