Cameroon opened up their TotalEnergies African Nations championship quest by beating regional rivals Congo 1-0 to acquire early leadership of group E.

The clash between two Nations was held on Monday night in Oran Olympic Stadium, Algeria.

Jerome Ngom Mbekeli scored a second half header to steer Cameroon to an important win in their opener.

Mbekeli (24), scored in the 63rd minute of the game. He rose the highest to connect onto a Ramses Nguimzeu cross from the left wing.

Despite defeat, the young Congolese side were a better side on the evening than Cameroon.

Congo who have reached the quarter-finals in each of their last two CHAN appearances, will target to brighten their knockout chances when they meet Niger in their last group E game at Oran Olympic Stadium this Friday.

With just one team qualifying from the three-team Group E, a tie between Congo and Niger will be a do or die for both teams.
