The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has appointed Ethiopian coach Asefa Firew Hailegebreal as head coach of all Uganda’s national women’s football teams until 2029.
Asefa arrives with considerable experience of Ugandan women’s football, having coached Kampala Queens FC, later rebranded as KCCA Women FC, from 2024 to 2026.
During his tenure, Asefa guided the Kampala-based side to the 2024/25 FUFA Women Super League title and the FUFA Women’s Cup, establishing himself as one of the prominent coaches in the domestic women’s game.
He takes over the national teams following the departure of South African coach Shyle Botes, who was sacked on September 27, 2026.
Botes had been in charge of Uganda’s national women’s teams since November 15, 2023. During his tenure, he guided Uganda to bronze medals at the 2023 African Games and the 2025 CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship.
Asefa’s appointment comes at a crucial moment, with his first major assignment arriving almost immediately.
Uganda is set to face Zambia on October 8 at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, in the second round of the 2028 Olympic Games women’s football qualifiers.
The Ethiopian tactician will therefore have limited time to assess his squad and implement his ideas before taking charge of his first competitive assignment with the national team.
His long-term mandate will cover Uganda’s senior women’s national team as well as the other national women’s teams, with FUFA expecting continuity and a structured pathway across the different age categories through 2029.
