Uganda’s light heavyweight contender Alfred Ojok saw his 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign halted after a unanimous defeat to England’s Dimeji Shittu in the Round of 16 in Glasgow.
Ojok, who had entered the bout with momentum and confidence, was outpointed 5–0 by Shittu in a tightly contested encounter.
The Englishman, who progressed directly to this stage courtesy of a bye, demonstrated composure and tactical control to earn a clean sweep on the judges’ scorecards.
The Ugandan had earlier delivered one of the standout performances of the preliminary rounds, overpowering Niue’s Anitelea Launiu in the Round of 32.
Ojok secured a dominant unanimous 5–0 victory, with all five judges scoring the bout convincingly in his favour (29–27, 29–27, 29–28, 30–26 and 30–26), signalling strong medal potential before his run was cut short.
His exit makes him the second Ugandan boxer to bow out of the competition, following lightweight (60kg) Ibrahim Khemis.
Khemis suffered a first-round elimination at the hands of Zambia’s Albert Ngulube, who controlled proceedings throughout to claim a unanimous 5–0 decision (29–26, 29–26, 29–26, 28–27 and 29–26).
Despite the setbacks, Uganda’s boxing prospects remain alive through welterweight fighter Batte Nuhu, who has emerged as the team’s standout performer in Glasgow.
Nuhu advanced to the quarterfinals after edging India’s Yadav Pratap via a narrow 3:2 split decision in a fiercely contested bout.
The victory marked his second successive win at the Games, underlining both resilience and growing tactical maturity.
He had earlier stamped his authority in the Round of 32 with a commanding unanimous 5–0 victory over Nigeria’s Abdulwahab Abdulramon.
Uganda fielded a six-man boxing team at the Games, and with Nuhu still in contention, attention now shifts to the remaining fighters yet to step into the ring.
