Uganda opened its medal account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow through a composed and technically sound performance from para-swimmer Husnah Kukundakwe, who clinched silver in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB8 final.
Kukundakwe touched the wall in 1:26.20, a time that firmly secured second place in a highly competitive field.
The race was won by England’s Brock Whiston, who set a new Games record of 1:22.05, while compatriot Lona Winnifrith claimed bronze in 1:26.31, narrowly behind the Ugandan.
The final also featured strong depth, with Australia’s Alyssa Gillespie and Gemma Sellick finishing fourth and fifth respectively in 1:32.80 and 1:33.95, while England’s Isabella Haynes placed sixth in 1:34.35.
Kukundakwe’s podium finish not only marked a personal milestone but also delivered Uganda’s first medal of the Glasgow Games, placing the nation among early contributors to the medal table alongside Cyprus, Jersey, Samoa, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda, each with a single medal.
By Monday evening, Australia maintained a commanding lead on the overall standings with 59 medals, followed by England (29) and Canada (21).
Scotland and South Africa were tied on 11 medals, while Nigeria rounded off the top six with 10.
