The third edition of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Nansana Sports District Weekend League officially got underway on Sunday, 28th June 2026 at Alliance High School, ushering in a new phase of growth, inclusivity, and competitive expansion.
The launch, presided over by USSSA Chief Executive Officer Christopher Mugisha Banage, featured two opening fixtures that set the tone for the season.
In the boys’ football opener, London College Nansana edged Oxford High School 1-0 in a fiercely contested encounter defined by intensity, technical quality, and physical duels.
Richmond Wasswa’s decisive second-half strike proved the difference in a tightly balanced contest.
While addressing attendees, Banage commended the district’s commitment to the initiative.
“The weekend league is strictly something for growth.
Thank you for embracing the initiative and thank you for the consistency and continuity.
In this league, students frequently play and this improves growth of a player in skills, confidence, adapt good decision making over time.
This league helps schools to identify new and young talents who would not have gotten chance in the open U20 qualifiers and National championships.
As USSSA, we organise championships and they are played once and after students return to schools and sit to wait for another full year to play again, so to create more playing and continuity, we thought of the weekend league played by schools of almost having the same proximity.
It’s cost saving since schools are in close proximity.
Teams can even walk to venues to play matches and this is pocket friendly.
My clalyon call to all our zones, is to embrace the weekend league concept.
The concept in important building good relationship between students, teacher and schools and in the end builds healthy and strong rivalries.”
A landmark highlight of this edition is the introduction of girls’ football.
Alliance High School marked the historic debut with an emphatic 8-0 victory over St. Raphael Future Bells, with Bridget Ainebyona scoring twice and six teammates adding to the tally.
League CEO Simon Mushabe emphasized the expansion:
“We were the first ever sports district to embrace the weekend league.
And this league has grown over the years from the 9 teams in the first edition to 13 in second.
This year’s edition has attracted 17 teams. We also introduced a mandatory transformative chapter for girls football.
It’s a must for every participating schools in boys football to register a girls football team.
This will help us to empower girls and discover untapped talents in our schools.”
The league will run until the end of the third term, culminating in the crowning of champions.
