In a resounding victory, Uganda’s women’s football team has etched their names into history by claiming their first-ever Homeless World Cup title.
The Ugandans dominated the final, securing a convincing 6-0 win over nine-time winners Mexico at Rådhusplassen in Oslo.
Uganda’s path to triumph was marked by exceptional performances and unwavering determination.
After topping Group B by a single point ahead of Mexico, the team stormed through the knockout rounds, dispatching India in the quarterfinals and Romania in the semis.
The final showcased the team’s most dominant display, as they outplayed Mexico with flair and precision.
By lifting the women’s crown, Uganda became only the third African side to achieve this feat, following Kenya (2011) and South Africa.
The title-winning squad, comprising Eva Nagaayi, Josephine Ndagire, Viola Namuddu, Cissy Nakato, Stella Namisango, Jemimah Twesigye, Sharifah Kitali, and Shadia Nambasa, demonstrated exceptional grit, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino lauded the Ugandan team, saying, “This is a momentous achievement for Uganda, Africa, and the Homeless World Cup. Their story shows the power of football to change lives and unite people.”
Uganda’s efforts were further recognized with the FIFPRO Fair Play Award, highlighting the team’s commitment to sportsmanship and respect.
The 20th Homeless World Cup featured 63 teams from 48 countries and over 500 players.
Uganda’s success added to their growing reputation, coming just months after defending their Africa Women’s Cup crown in Nairobi.
The tournament has championed social change through football since its launch in 2003. Uganda’s stunning triumph in Norway was more than just a title – it was a celebration of resilience, unity, and hope.
Meanwhile, Egypt made history on the men’s side, becoming the first African champions with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Portugal.
This achievement underscores the growing impact of football in promoting social change and unity worldwide.
