UCU vs St. Lawrence

Tue 17th Sept 2024

3:00pm, Mukono

Pepsi University Football League former champions Uganda Christian University (UCU) and St. Lawrence University will face off in the 2024/25 season opener.

The game will be held on Tuesday, the 17th September in Mukono at UCU Grounds.

The two teams last met in the 2019 Final at Lugogo with UCU overcoming St. Lawrence to be crowned champions for their first and only UFL trophy.

Earlier this year, UCU had a shot at winning the trophy for the second time in three seasons but lost 3-1 to Nkumba University in the final of the 2023-24 season at Lugogo.

This season UCU are pooled in Group C with St. Lawrence University alongside Kabale University and YMCA.

Coach Jimmy Kintu Mwera says it will be a tough group but he believes they can make it to this year’s knockout.

“We managed to make it to the final last season, that was our second final in three seasons which means we have been playing well. We have been drawn in a tough group, St. Lawrence, YMCA and Kabale are not easy teams, but I believe we shall make it,” Kintu.

On home soil last season, UCU didn’t lose a single game, winning 4 games and drawing only once and Kintu says they want to continue along those lines as they bid for a second title this season.

“We cannot take St. Lawrence for granted. They are a strong team who have also made it to the finals many times. So it’s going to be great challenge playing them in the very first game of the season. But I believe it will go well,” Kintu added.

On the other hand, Davis Nnono says that his team is ready and will do all it takes to upset the Cardinals.

“My camp is ready. We need to top the group so every game matters at this point. UCU is always a good side season in and season out because of the good coach they have  and it will not be easy to beat them but we shall do all it takes to win. We shall come out to compete and the best team will win,” Nnono.
