NAIROBI, 19 October 2026 – Uganda’s Bruno Kakande and Samuel Nsubuga will spearhead the country’s campaign on Day Three of the African Boxing Championships in Nairobi today, with both boxers targeting victories that would guarantee them bronze medals and places in the semi-finals.
The duo will feature in Session Three, which gets underway at 13:00, as Uganda seeks to strengthen its medal prospects at the continental showpiece.

Flyweight Kakande opens Uganda’s campaign in Bout 24 against Kenya’s Kelvin Maina in the 47–50kg category.
Fighting in front of a potentially partisan home crowd, Kakande faces a demanding assignment against the Kenyan boxer, who will be eager to capitalise on home support.
A victory would propel the Ugandan into the semi-finals and assure him of at least a bronze medal, giving him an early opportunity to boost Uganda’s medal tally.
Bantamweight Nsubuga, meanwhile, returns to the ring for his second bout of the tournament, carrying momentum from an emphatic opening performance.
The Ugandan, competing in the 50–55kg division, registered a commanding 5–0 victory over Benin’s Osias Agbotoney on Day One to book his place in the quarter-finals.
He now faces Algeria’s Amine Zanaz in Bout 31, with a semi-final berth and a guaranteed medal at stake.
Another convincing display would further underline Nsubuga’s credentials as one of Uganda’s leading prospects in the competition.
Uganda enters Monday’s action after a mixed second day in Nairobi, which saw Aziz Abdul Ringo and Richard Kasujja advance to the semi-finals, while four other boxers endured contrasting outcomes across their respective bouts.

Ringo and Kasujja’s progression has already strengthened Uganda’s medal prospects, and the team will be hoping Kakande and Nsubuga can join them in the last four.
However, Uganda’s captain, Ukasha Matovu, suffered a setback after losing 5–0 to Kenya’s Boniface Mogunde in the light-middleweight division (65–70kg).
Innocent Amoko also bowed out after a 4–1 defeat to Kenya’s Aloice Vincent in the 60–65kg category, while women’s light boxer Fatuma Nabikolo narrowly lost 3–2 to Egypt’s Mohamed Rahma in the 57–60kg division.
Despite those disappointments, Uganda retains opportunities to build on its encouraging performances, with the remaining contests expected to test the depth and resilience of the national team.
Monday’s Session Three features 15 bouts across the flyweight, bantamweight, lightweight and welterweight divisions.
Other notable contests include Algeria’s Fares Belmoukfi against Rwanda’s Iyanone Jean Claude in the flyweight category, as well as Somalia’s Mahad Farah taking on Angola’s Martinho Loureiro Ferreir Martinho.
The welterweight division will also provide an intriguing contest as Kenya’s Aloice Vincent, who defeated Uganda’s Amoko, faces Egypt’s Abeed Abdelfatah in Bout 38.
For Uganda, however, the immediate focus remains on Kakande and Nsubuga.
Both have a clear opportunity to convert their quarter-final appearances into guaranteed podium finishes and keep the country’s pursuit of continental boxing honours firmly on course.
